Our vision

The Cloud One Hotels is part of the Motel One Group. Our corporate vision is to use our business activities to help change the world for the better in a sustainable way. To this end, we incorporate specific environmental and social measures into our hotel operations across all The Cloud One Hotels, from New York to Prague.


We see ourselves as a key hub for sustainable travel and are committed to making stays at our hotels sustainable experiences – for guests, staff, the local community and the environment. To give even greater visibility to the most important issue of our time – sustainable development – we have, for example, displayed the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals in the reception area of our first The Cloud One New York-Downtown hotel.


We are committed to having a positive impact on the cities in which we operate. This includes being mindful of the significant environmental impact of our business activities. Our journey towards minimising and managing our environmental impact begins now.

EveryONE Counts

For us, sustainability is not a goal, but a process. Our design concept, EveryONE Counts, sums it up perfectly: every contribution counts. From room cleaning – which a guest can opt out of using the My Service Option – to the regional breakfast and the leased bike that staff use to cycle to work.


This is made visible by the Action Button: a simple icon that appears wherever a contribution can be made.

Our programme: One Planet. One Future.

As part of the Motel One Group, The Cloud One Hotels is contributing to the ‘One Planet. One Future.’ programme. The programme is based on the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set out in the 2030 Agenda.


‘One Planet. One Future.’ is divided into seven areas of action:

  • Climate Protection – Measurable reduction in CO₂ emissions and energy consumption.
  • Green Buildings – Building certifications under BREEAM, LEED and DGNB.
  • Sustainable Design – Certified materials, preferably from local manufacturers.
  • Operations & Services – Green Key, regional breakfast, reduced packaging, My Service Option.
  • One Team – Training and further education, transport options, fair working conditions.
  • One Society – The One Foundation promotes education and equal opportunities for disadvantaged young people.
  • Governance – Code of Conduct and compliance framework for the entire group.

Carbon footprint

Under the Paris Agreement, 195 countries have committed to limiting global warming to well below two degrees Celsius compared with the pre-industrial average temperature. The Cloud One supports this objective and has implemented far-reaching measures to reduce CO₂ emissions in recent years. As a result, we have been able to reduce CO₂ emissions per overnight stay by 49 per cent in 2025 compared with 2019.*

Electricity from renewable sources

All The Cloud One Hotels source 100 per cent of their electricity from renewable sources, namely hydroelectric, solar or wind power.

Further measures

  • Use of modern LED lighting in corridors, offices, plant rooms, underground car parks, stairwells and in many guest rooms
  • Energy-efficient heating and cooling of guest rooms through the use of fan coil units
  • Glazing with solar and thermal protection to reduce the build-up of heat in guest rooms and thus minimise the need for cooling
  • Regular analysis of consumption data and the carrying out of energy audits
  • Curtains on the south-facing side reduce the build-up of heat in the rooms and are closed by housekeeping as required

Green Key certification

Like all hotels in the Motel One Group, Cloud One Hotels are certified with the Green Key label. New openings and acquisitions are certified within the first 12 months.


Green Key is an independent eco-label for hotels and other tourism businesses. Currently, more than 8,500 establishments in over 90 countries are certified (as of January 2026). The criteria cover environmental management (water, energy, waste, cleaning) and sustainability training for staff, guests and suppliers. Green Key is recognised by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), and compliance is audited annually by independent third parties.


In 2025, Stiftung Warentest assessed six sustainability labels for hotels and rated Green Key as credible, alongside two other labels. Read the report

Regional breakfast

We source our food and drink as locally as possible, often directly from small local businesses. In New York, for example, the handmade jam comes from Brooklyn, whilst in Hamburg the honey comes from Björn Schumann’s urban apiary. A large proportion of our range is certified organic and/or Fairtrade.*

Save water

The Cloud One Hotels use water-saving sanitary fittings. Standard features include toilet cisterns with a two-button system (3–4 litres for a small flush, 6–9 litres for a full flush) and shower fittings with a flow rate of 7.8 to 9 litres per minute. As part of the Green Key certification process, water consumption is monitored, water-saving fittings are installed and leaks are recorded.

Hotel toiletries and textiles

Shampoo, shower gel, lotion and soap are certified and provided in refillable pump dispensers. Towels, washcloths, shower mats and duvet covers are also certified as sustainable.

My Service Option

Room cleaning is included in our service. With the ‘My Service’ option, guests can choose not to have their rooms cleaned daily. This saves water, energy and cleaning products.

Each The Cloud One Hotel has its own design concept. Here, too, we give preference to local manufacturers and materials with verifiable eco-labels.

Training & Development

Staff have access to One University’s professional development programmes: face-to-face training, e-learning courses and live online training sessions. Internal development programmes support staff on their path to leadership roles. We also ensure that staff share in the company’s success.

Mobility services

We help staff travel to work in a low-emission way: through free bicycle or e-bike leasing, or a subsidy towards public transport tickets. In 2025, 63 per cent of eligible Motel One Group staff in Germany made use of our sustainable mobility options.*

One Society – Social Engagement

“Helping young people lead self-determined lives through education and support, and showing them the opportunities available to them – that is something very close to my heart.” – Dieter Müller, founder and chairman of the Motel One Group


Through the One Foundation, Motel One is taking on social and societal responsibility. The purpose of this charitable foundation, established in 2018, is to support disadvantaged people, particularly with regard to their integration into society and their education and training at school and in the workplace.

Operational projects run by the One Foundation:

  • Apprenticeship Scholarship – Since 2023, we have been awarding annual scholarships to apprentices in the hospitality sector: monthly financial support, non-financial support and preparation for their future careers.
  • Thinking outside the box – Together with the association and Motel One, the One Foundation offers a two-week training programme for people from migrant or refugee backgrounds, providing practical insight into the hospitality sector.

The One Foundation also supports, amongst other things:

  • Phase BE – Summer Academy to reduce the school drop-out rate: pupils catch up on schoolwork and build their self-efficacy.
  • KoALA – Support for catering apprentices without a German passport: advice and practical help with everyday matters, e.g. with appointments at government offices.
  • German Depression Aid Foundation – Psychosocial coaching for young people under 25 who have been unemployed for a long time and have mental health conditions, to help them return to the labour market.
